General Data Protection Regulation Countdown
On 25 May 2018, the UK's current data protection legislation (the Data Protection Act 1998) will be replaced by the General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"). The GDPR imposes very significant additional obligations on the way organisations are able to lawfully obtain, hold and handle personal data. The law will apply in full from day one and there is a proactive obligation to be able to demonstrate compliance on demand. The new regime brings with it a substantial increase in potential fines, which can in some cases be up to 4% of turnover or €20 million (whichever is higher).
